What Is a Heat Pump?
A heat pump is an electric heating system that extracts heat from the air, ground, or water outside and transfers it into your home. Instead of burning fuel, it moves existing heat, making it up to 400% efficient. That means for every unit of electricity used, you get 3–4 units of heat in return.
Switching to a heat pump can reduce your heating costs by 30 to 70% and lower your carbon emissions, especially as Ireland’s electricity grid becomes greener.
What Grants Are Available?
The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) offers grants of up to €6,500 for installing a new heat pump system. The exact amount depends on the type of heat pump and the size of your home:
- Air to water or ground source heat pumps: Up to €6,500
- Air to air systems (for space heating only): Up to €3,500
- Technical assessment: €200
These grants are designed to support first time installations, replacing older heating systems with more sustainable solutions.

Do You Qualify?
To qualify, your home must have been built before 2021 and be well insulated to retain the heat a pump provides. That means good levels of attic, wall, and window insulation are required.
